B.E.S.T. Staff
Background
In January 2003, MEO engaged in an historical event by contracting with the Department of Public Safety (PSD) to implement the reentry program for sentenced inmates at Maui Community Correctional Center (MCCC). Under the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative Grant, offered by the U.S. Department of Justice, PSD was awarded $2 million to provide comprehensive support services and training to inmates during their incarceration and upon their release from custody. With these grant funds, MEO established the B.E.S.T. Reintegration Program to promote the successful reentry of former inmates who were returning home. In order to qualify for the BEST Program, an individual must meet the following criteria: 1) is between the ages of 18 & 35; 2) has committed a Class A or B Felony; and 3) has a length of incarceration of one year or more.
Philosophy
Based on the recognition that the men and women that are incarcerated are members of our `ohana our brothers and sisters, our children and grandchildren, our neighbors and friends that will eventually return home, the BEST Program operates on a philosophy of "community justice." The BEST Program works in collaboration with our Partners (MCCC Staff, Probation, Parole and Maui Intake Services) and the BEST Planning and Advisory Council to share in the collective responsibility of preparing prisoners for their successful reintegration into the community.
The BEST Staff is committed to helping our clients acquire the tools to rebuild their lives, and become responsible, and contributing members of our community. In turn, this will reduce recidivism rates and build a safer community for all of us.
